Italian giants AC Milan are leading the race to sign French striker of Congolese descent, Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a standout 2024/25 campaign in which he netted 17 league goals, firmly establishing himself as one of Palace’s most important players.

With only 18 months left on his contract and negotiations over an extension stalling, the stage appears set for a potential January transfer. Reports from TEAMtalk suggest Milan could secure his services for a fee in the region of £35-40 million.

Mateta’s physicality, aerial strength and consistent goal threat make him an attractive option for the Rossoneri, who are seeking a traditional No. 9 to spearhead Massimiliano Allegri’s attack.

The forward has long admired the Italian giants and is said to have encouraged his representatives last summer to push for a move to San Siro.

Palace’s initial £50 million valuation stalled discussions at the time, but Milan’s renewed interest, coupled with the striker’s desire for a Serie A switch, has reopened the door.

While major Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, have shown admiration for Mateta, the prospect of playing in Serie A and the tactical fit at Milan could prove decisive.

Crystal Palace are gearing up for a challenging negotiation process, but with Mateta having risen from loanee to fan favourite at Selhurst Park, the club may ultimately allow him to pursue what is viewed as a dream move.
