It’s a learning curve – ‘Under-pressure’ Benni McCarthy backed despite 8-0 loss to Senegal
Kenyan coach Edward Manoah has come out in support of Benni McCarthy and the Harambee Stars after their heavy 8-0 friendly defeat to Senegal.
The loss, which took place during the recent FIFA international break, drew widespread criticism from fans, former players, and even Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohammed.
Despite the backlash, Manoah urged patience, framing the result as part of the team’s growth.
“Kenya vs Senegal was a test match and a process in the right direction,” Manoah told Mozzart Sport.
“This process will be tough, ruthless and painful because we aspire to sit at the same table with Africa’s big boys.
Manoah stressed that facing strong opponents regularly is essential for progress.
“These are the kinds of games we should be playing every international break if we are serious about preparing for AFCON 2027.
“We belong to the big stage. At times, we have been cowardly, failing to take the bold step to play top teams.
He concluded by emphasizing the long-term benefits: “Keeping to this script will build belief and desire in the country again, and help us earn our deserved seat at the big table,” he added.
