Fiston Mayele celebrates Interclub Player of the Year honour after standout season

Fiston Mayele says his recognition as Interclub Player of the Year is the result of unwavering commitment and a season marked by major achievements for both club and country.

The Congolese forward received the award during the CAF Awards ceremony after a campaign in which he played a central role for Pyramids FC.

Mayele enjoyed an outstanding year in the Egyptian Premier League, where his contributions in attack were instrumental in Pyramids’ title-winning campaign.

His form carried into continental competition as well, culminating in his triumph as an African champion with the Cairo-based side in June.

These performances positioned him firmly among the continent’s top footballers and ultimately secured him CAF’s Interclub Player of the Year award for the 2024–2025 season.

Speaking to CAF media shortly after receiving the accolade, the striker reflected on the work that had led to the honour.

“It’s been a really long season. This is the result of hard work. I worked very hard last year and today I am being rewarded. I am very proud,” he said, expressing both satisfaction and gratitude after a taxing but rewarding campaign.

For the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mayele’s win carries symbolic weight.

It ends an 11-year wait for a Congolese player to claim the award, the last being Trésor Mputu, one of the nation’s most celebrated football figures.

Mayele’s achievement therefore not only highlights his personal excellence but also restores the DRC’s presence among the continent’s top performers in club football.

The forward’s rise over the past year has been closely tied to Pyramids’ emergence as a dominant force domestically and in African competitions.

His consistency, goal-scoring prowess and relentless drive drew widespread attention, making him a standout choice for the continental honour.

As he reflected on the season, Mayele emphasised the demands of competing on multiple fronts and the determination required to excel at the highest level.

His comments underscored a campaign built on resilience, discipline and ambition – qualities that ultimately earned him recognition from Africa’s governing body.

With the award now secured, Mayele’s focus is expected to shift back to maintaining the standards that defined his rise.

His latest accolade places him among the elite in African football and reinforces his role as a leading figure in Congolese sport.
