Lamine Yamal and Lucas Ribeiro among nominees for 2025 Puskas Award

Lamine Yamal has been named among the 11 contenders for the 2025 FIFA Puskas Award after his outstanding strike in Barcelona’s derby win over Espanyol.

The Spanish youngster, who has a Moroccan father and an Equatoguinean mother, continues to draw global attention, and his latest recognition highlights his rapid rise within European football.

FIFA unveiled the shortlist on Thursday, celebrating the most spectacular goals scored between 11 August 2024 and 2 August 2025.

The award, named after Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas, honours the most exceptional scoring moments across world football.

Yamal earned his nomination for a superb left-footed effort against Espanyol.

He cut in from the right before bending a curling shot into the far top corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. The goal was praised widely for its technique, precision and confidence.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice also made the cut for his long-range strike against Real Madrid in April, while South Africa’s Lucas Ribeiro’s brilliant effort for Mamelodi Sundowns against Borussia Dortmund added African representation to the list.
