Algeria’s Zellige jersey sparks frenzy and cultural pride
The release of Algeria’s latest warm-up jersey has captured the imagination of fans while stirring an unexpected international controversy.
Inspired by Zellige, the intricate mosaic tilework that has long been part of Algerian heritage, the kit was unveiled by Adidas and the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), quickly becoming a cultural and commercial sensation.
The design process was a collaborative effort. At the time, FAF enlisted communications manager Aboud Salah-Bey, who brought in graphic designer Nabil Masdoua to develop mock-ups.
These designs were handed to Adidas, forming the creative blueprint for the jersey that would eventually adorn Islam Slimani and his teammates.
Drawing on motifs from Algeria’s rich mosaic tradition, the warm-up kit pays homage to cities like Tlemcen, Algiers, Dellys, Béjaïa, and Constantine, where Zellige has been a defining artistic expression for centuries.
Upon its release across Adidas and FAF media channels, the jersey quickly captured public attention.
Algerian fans embraced the design with enthusiasm, and its popularity translated into record-breaking sales.
No Algerian national team training kit has ever sold as well and as quickly as this famous ‘Zellige’ design, observers noted.
The success underlined the jersey’s ability to merge contemporary sport aesthetics with deep cultural resonance.
Yet the celebration was not without controversy. Morocco officially protested to Adidas, claiming the mosaic motifs were inspired by its own heritage.
The FAF and Algerian media were quick to point out that Zellige is not exclusive to any single country, but a shared Maghreb tradition with strong roots in Algeria.
The objection, widely seen as excessive, did little to diminish the jersey’s symbolic and commercial impact.
Algeria debuted the Zellige warm-up kit during the September 2022 FIFA international window, while the accompanying 1982 match jersey made its first appearance on 27 September 2022 against Nigeria, a game Algeria won 2-1.
The blend of historical reference and cultural homage in the design captured both fans’ imaginations and the international spotlight, demonstrating how football kits can transcend sport to become symbols of national pride.
Beyond aesthetics, the jersey exemplifies the growing trend of teams using kit designs to celebrate cultural heritage.
For Algeria, the Zellige pattern not only reinforced national identity but also set a new benchmark for fan engagement and merchandise success.
As the national team prepares for upcoming international competitions, the Zellige design remains a standout symbol of Algeria’s footballing and cultural narrative.
