Bristol City coach hails Kenyan prospect Zak Vyner as ‘outstanding’ player
Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber has offered glowing praise for defender Zak Vyner, describing him as an “outstanding” and “humble” player.
The remarks could further strengthen Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy’s interest in the Championship star.
Vyner, who is eligible to play for Kenya through his heritage, reached a major career milestone on Tuesday when he made his 219th appearance for Bristol City in their 3-1 comeback win over Southampton, becoming the club’s record appearance maker.
The 28-year-old centre-back delivered another commanding performance at Ashton Gate, drawing admiration from his manager.
“From the first second when I took over the team, and I see Zak Vyner, he was, for me, an outstanding player profile-wise,” Struber told Bristol Live.
“He has pace, he has physical power, he has technical power, and he is tactically smart, so he has everything in the end to work with a player and develop the player.”
Struber also revealed that Vyner’s versatility allows him to excel beyond central defence.
“Now, we can see he’s not only a centre-back; he can do it also on the six on a really good level, and he is, with a consistency, on the way. Every game, he is reliable,” he said.
“He’s a really good player, a very interesting profile, and a really good boy.”
The Bristol coach added that Vyner’s character off the pitch has made him a popular figure within the squad.
“I like him so much. How we work together, how he is in the dressing room, and how he acts after top performances. He’s a humble guy,” Struber said.
Vyner received his first call-up to the Kenyan national team in May 2024 but was unable to debut due to passport issues.
McCarthy has since confirmed renewed discussions with the player and his club.
With Kenya set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Vyner’s potential inclusion could prove a major boost for the Harambee Stars’ long-term ambitions.
