CAF Champions League: Lupopo slam ‘baseless’ mistreatment claims after 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates

Congolese side FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo have strongly rejected allegations that they mistreated Orlando Pirates during their CAF Champions League first-leg clash in Lubumbashi.

The club described the accusations as “unfounded” and “slanderous,” insisting that they upheld CAF standards of hospitality throughout the South Africans’ stay.

The controversy began when South African radio host Tbo Touch claimed on social media that Pirates were poorly treated during their 3-0 defeat to Lupopo in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He further alleged that some players feared there were landmines planted on the pitch, sparking outrage among fans.

In a firm response, Lupopo moved quickly to clear their name.

“Lupopo categorically denies the unfounded allegations of mistreatment towards our Champions League opponent,” the club said in a statement.

“Following the defamatory allegations circulating in certain media outlets and on social media, Football Club Saint-Eloi Lupopo wishes to firmly and categorically deny the accusations that it deliberately provided deplorable logistical conditions to the South Africans of Orlando Pirates Football Club during their recent stay in Lubumbashi.”

The Congolese giants stressed that they provided ‘professional and CAF-compliant’ arrangements, including accommodation, transport, and training facilities.

“These accusations are completely unfounded, slanderous, and seriously undermine the reputation of our club and the values of respect and fair play that are dear to us,” the club added.

Lupopo’s response aims to protect their image ahead of the return leg in South Africa, where tensions may rise following the controversy.

Pirates, who trail 3-0 on aggregate, must score at least three unanswered goals to force a penalty shootout or win 4-0 to progress to the group stage.

The second leg promises to be intense, but for now, the off-field storm has placed Lupopo’s reputation under scrutiny as they seek to defend their conduct and their commanding first-leg advantage.
