Brazilian-Cameroonian star Vinicius Junior backed by Courtois after Getafe controversy
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has come to the defence of teammate Vinicius Junior following criticism over his conduct in the club’s victory against Getafe on Sunday.
Vinicius, who has Cameroonian roots through his mother, was accused by sections of the Spanish media of provoking Getafe defender Allan Nyom’s red card and taunting coach José Bordalás during a heated encounter.
The winger’s involvement sparked debate over his temperament and on-field behaviour — but Courtois was quick to dismiss those claims as unfair.
“It’s not easy. At 18, many of you made fun of him,” Courtois said after the match. “He didn’t do anything wrong, he came on and they were against him.
“It’s normal that he has responses. They looked for him from the start and he unhinged the opponent. He had a good response. His entry made us create more danger. They look for him. It’s very unfair to him. He’s a great kid who has to keep doing what he does.”
The Belgian goalkeeper further praised Vinicius for his maturity in dealing with physical challenges and hostile treatment from opposition defenders and fans alike.
“It’s not always easy for a stadium to look out for you, for players to hit you hard. He’s been improving,” Courtois said.
“If he’s learned to live with conflict and unhinge opponents… Diego Costa drove Premier League defenders crazy because he did that. If Vini can do it, it’s perfect for us.
“The important thing is that he stays focused and plays his game. He’s one of the best in the world.”
Vinicius has continued to be one of Real Madrid’s most dangerous attacking outlets as the club chases domestic and European honours.
