Zamalek stands firm behind sporting director John Edward amid poor results
In a strongly worded statement, the board of Zamalek, led by Hussein Labib, responded to widespread rumors about the future of their sporting director, John Edward, following the team’s recent poor results in the Egyptian Premier League.
The club reaffirmed its unwavering support for its administrative staff and delivered a warning to what it called the “spreaders of fake news.” In the official statement, Zamalek clarified: “The board confirms that there are absolutely no plans to end John Edward’s tenure as sporting director.”
They added, “There is no truth to the recent speculation about the management considering ending Edward’s experience at Zamalek,” emphasizing their intent to pursue legal action against anyone who continues to propagate falsehoods about the club’s football operations.
Despite dropping to second place after a streak of disappointing matches, including a draw against El Gouna, a defeat by rivals Al Ahly, and another draw with Ghazl El Mahalla, the club maintains its backing for the current football management. Zamalek highlighted challenges like ongoing financial strain, delayed wages, and mounting fan pressure, but insisted it will “continue supporting the football administration and work to overcome all obstacles to meet this season’s objectives.”
The statement concluded: “This comes in line with the board’s vision to fulfill the fans’ ambitions of continuing to win titles.”
Throughout this challenging period, Zamalek has faced fierce criticism from fans, especially after a series of lackluster performances and unresolved financial issues. Yet, the club leadership remains adamant that stability, not hasty changes, is the path forward.
