Yakubu Ayegbeni has praised Ademola Lookman and Atalanta for resolving their differences and focusing on the season ahead.

The Nigerian forward endured a frustrating start to the campaign after a proposed summer move to Inter Milan collapsed.

The breakdown of the transfer left him sidelined from the first team, sparking speculation over his future in Bergamo.

Ayegbeni reflected on the situation in an interview with Footy-Africa, highlighting the psychological impact such failed moves can have on a player.

He admired Lookman’s patience during a challenging period and commended Atalanta for opening the door to his return.

“Situations like this can affect any player’s mindset,” Ayegbeni said. “When a move you expect doesn’t happen, it’s tough to stay focused.

But I must congratulate Lookman for staying patient and Atalanta for welcoming him back.

The most important thing is that he’s on the pitch again, doing what he does best — scoring goals and making an impact.”

The former Everton and Nigeria striker emphasised that Lookman’s return benefits both the player and the club.

He believes the forward’s quality and previous performances prove his value to Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

“Ademola is a top-quality player,” Ayegbeni explained. “We’ve all seen his impact over the past seasons. Atalanta needs him, and he needs Atalanta to continue developing his career.

It’s great they found common ground. Now, I hope he enjoys his football again, stays focused, and delivers the performances we know he’s capable of.”

Lookman, 27, had hoped to join Inter Milan in the summer, but negotiations stalled before the transfer deadline.

The uncertainty around his future led to a period out of the matchday squad, sparking questions about his relationship with the club.

After weeks of speculation, Atalanta reinstated Lookman to full training and included him in their recent matchday squad.

He made his first appearance of the season last week, signalling a fresh start after a turbulent few months.

The Nigerian international has built a strong reputation in Serie A since joining Atalanta in 2022. His direct style, creativity, and finishing have made him a vital part of the team’s attack.

Last season, he played a crucial role in their European qualification campaign and delivered key performances in domestic competitions.

Ayegbeni, who scored 21 goals for Nigeria during his career, believes Lookman’s situation offers a valuable lesson for players dealing with transfer setbacks.

He stressed the importance of resilience and professionalism in navigating career challenges.

“Football careers always face moments like this,” he said. “The key is how you respond. Ademola responded well by staying committed and working hard.

That attitude will help him succeed this season.”

Lookman now focuses on rebuilding momentum and contributing to Atalanta’s ambitions.

With his future clarified, both player and club aim to put the summer’s turbulence behind them and target another successful campaign in Serie A and Europe.
