Egyptian giants Al Ahly are on the brink of appointing Danish tactician Thomas Thomasberg as their new head coach.

Al Ahly have been without a substantive trainer in the past few days following the sacking of Spanish trainer Jose Riveiro after a string of unimpressive result to the start of the 2025/26 football campaign.

Riveiro left Al Ahly after just four month spell at the club following a significant decline in results, most recently a loss to Pyramids FC.

Since the dismissal of former Orlando Pirates trainer, Emad El Nahhas has been serving as the interim coach of the African giants as the search for a new tactician continues.

Al Ahly representatives are currently in Denmark negotiating directly with the experienced tactician over the coaching job. Sources close to the suggest talks have progressed significantly between both parties.

Thomasberg, 50, was born on October 15, 1974, and has been unemployed since leaving Danish club Midtjylland, which he led to the 2023-2024 league title.

Al Ahly midfielder Imam Ashour trained under Thomasberg during his short spell at Midtjylland.
