Liverpool midfielder James Balagizi has sealed a season-long loan move to Forest Green Rovers, continuing his development away from Anfield.

The 21-year-old will spend the 2025/26 campaign under Robbie Savage, whose side have made a blistering start to the National League season and sit unbeaten at the top of the table with 13 points from their opening five matches.

Balagizi, who is of Zimbabwean and DR Congolese heritage, has long been regarded as one of Liverpool’s brightest academy prospects.

An England youth international, he joined the club’s setup at the age of 11 and became a standout performer for both the U18s and U21s, playing a key role in the side that reached the 2020/21 FA Youth Cup final.

His move to Forest Green is expected to provide him with vital game time in a competitive environment as he continues to push towards senior-level football.

The midfielder has already gained valuable experience in the Football League and beyond through loan stints at Crawley Town, Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock.

His arrival at Forest Green has been hailed as a significant coup for a club determined to secure promotion back to League Two at the first attempt.

Manager Robbie Savage welcomed the signing, praising the club’s ambition and backing from its leadership.

“It’s another great bit of recruitment for the club and shows yet more incredible backing from Dale (Vince) and Asif (Rehmanwala). We’re delighted to add James to the squad,” he said.

Director of football Mark Bowen also emphasised the importance of the deal, pointing out the level of competition for Balagizi’s signature.

“James is a top talent and we’re delighted to be able to attract a player of his ability to the football club in amongst fighting off interest from clubs higher up the pyramid.

“We’re incredibly thankful to Liverpool for allowing us to aid his development and add more quality to our squad here at FGR.”
