Former Barcelona captain Sergi Busquets has thrown his support behind Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Dembélé, born in France to a Mauritanian mother and Malian father, has been in scintillating form this season, driving PSG’s attack with pace, flair and consistency.

His African heritage has long been a source of pride for him, and Busquets believes that his performances now warrant recognition on football’s biggest individual stage.

The two players shared the dressing room at Barcelona for several seasons, where Busquets captained the side and witnessed Dembélé’s evolution first-hand.

Now at Inter Miami, the veteran midfielder still regards his former teammate as one of the most decisive attackers in world football.

“Dembélé has been better than the others and more consistent,” Busquets told reporters. “We know what kind of player he is, the difference he can make, and what he’s capable of offering.”

His remarks come amid growing debate over the potential contenders for the Ballon d’Or.

Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal has emerged as one of the frontrunners after a breakthrough campaign, but Busquets made clear he would place Dembélé ahead of the teenager in the pecking order.

“Some of the Barcelona players would also deserve it,” he added, “but I don’t know what the voters will decide.”

Busquets’ endorsement adds weight to the argument that the 28-year-old winger, who has often battled injuries in his career, may finally be enjoying his peak years.
