Gambia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has unveiled a 25-player squad ahead of the Scorpions’ upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Burundi.
The West African side is set to face Kenya on 5 September before travelling to meet Burundi on 9 September. Both fixtures will play a pivotal role in determining Gambia’s standing in the qualifying rounds as they seek to make a historic appearance at the global showpiece.
Among the most notable names included in McKinstry’s selection are forwards Musa Barrow and Yankuba Minteh, two of the country’s most high-profile talents. Their inclusion signals the coach’s intent to blend experience with youthful energy as Gambia prepares for these critical fixtures.
The squad features a mix of seasoned internationals and emerging players, reflecting a strategic approach aimed at both immediate performance and long-term development. In goal, the trio of Ebrima Jarju, Sheikh Sibi, and Baboucar Gaye have been called upon to provide options between the posts.
Defensively, team captain Omar Colley leads a solid group that includes Bubacar Sedi Kinteh, Momodou ‘Lion’ Njie, Sheriff Sinyan, James Gomez, Alagie Saine, Sainey Sanyang, Joseph Ceesay, and Muhammed Sanneh. This backline is expected to bring both physicality and tactical awareness, crucial for navigating the high-stakes qualifiers.
In midfield, Ebou Adams headlines a group that also features Abubakrr Barry, Mahmudu Bajo, Jesper Ceesay, and Mouhamadou Drammeh. This combination offers versatility, ball control, and a strong work rate—attributes the Scorpions will need against their East African opponents.
Up front, Gambia has named a dynamic attack force. Musa Barrow and Yankuba Minteh, both plying their trade in Europe, bring creativity and finishing prowess. They are joined by Abdoulie Manneh, Alieu Fadera, Abdoulie Sanyang, Adama Sidibeh, Adama Bojang, and Ali Sowe—forming a well-rounded and energetic attacking line.
McKinstry’s selection suggests a focus on tactical flexibility and depth, as Gambia prepares for what promises to be a tightly contested qualifying group. The coach has previously emphasised the importance of maintaining competitive intensity and has shown confidence in rotating his squad depending on the opposition and match conditions.
The two upcoming fixtures could significantly shape Gambia’s World Cup aspirations. While the Scorpions have impressed in recent continental competitions, qualification for a first-ever World Cup remains the ultimate objective. With teams across Africa increasing their competitiveness, the margin for error is slim.
The inclusion of established players such as Barrow and Minteh is expected to galvanise the squad and inspire the younger players. Their international experience will be vital, especially in away fixtures where pressure and unfamiliar conditions can test the team’s resolve.
As the countdown to September begins, all eyes will be on McKinstry and his squad to deliver performances that keep Gambia’s World Cup dream alive.
