Simba punish defensive error to take CAF Champions League advantage over Wanderers

Tanzania’s Simba Sports Club will take a slender advantage into the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie after beating Malawi’s Mighty Wanderers 1-0 in Lilongwe.

Anicet Oura scored the only goal of the match in the second half, capitalising on a defensive error to hand the visitors a crucial victory at Bingu National Stadium on Sunday.

The result gives Simba the upper hand ahead of the return fixture in Tanzania, although Wanderers remain firmly in contention to overturn the deficit.

Oura punishes Wanderers mistake

The two sides produced an evenly contested opening half, with both creating opportunities in front of a large crowd.

Simba were backed by a strong travelling support, with supporters making the journey from Tanzania to rally behind one of East Africa’s biggest clubs.

Neither side could find a breakthrough before half-time, but the visitors eventually took advantage after the restart.

Oura pounced when a Wanderers defender failed to clear the ball, seizing the opportunity to put Simba ahead.

The goal changed the complexion of the contest, giving the Tanzanian side greater confidence as they settled into their tactical approach and looked to protect their lead.

Wanderers push for response

The Malawian side responded positively and increased the pressure in search of an equaliser.

Wanderers made attacking changes, introducing Sama Thierry and Promise Kamwendo in place of Muhammad Sulumba and Mphatso Kamanga as they attempted to find a way through Simba’s defence.

However, the visitors remained disciplined and well organised at the back, frustrating Wanderers throughout the closing stages.

Despite sustained pressure from the hosts, Simba held firm to secure a valuable clean sheet and a narrow first-leg victory.

All to play for in Tanzania

The result puts Simba in a strong position ahead of the return leg on 11 September, when Wanderers will travel to Tanzania needing to overturn the one-goal deficit.

For the Malawian side, the defeat will be particularly frustrating after a single defensive lapse proved decisive in an otherwise competitive contest.

Simba, meanwhile, will look to use home advantage to finish the job and progress to the next stage of the CAF Champions League preliminary rounds.
