Algerian international Ismaël Bennacer’s Olympique de Marseille hopes threatened by Dani Ceballos pursuit

Ismaël Bennacer’s prospects of joining Olympique de Marseille have been cast into doubt as the club intensifies its pursuit of Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos.

Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi had identified Bennacer as a strong candidate to strengthen his midfield, but the club’s shifting priorities may derail the Algerian international’s hopes of returning to Ligue 1.

AC Milan, meanwhile, are pushing for a permanent sale of the 26-year-old, who remains under contract until June 2027, while Marseille are only interested in a loan deal.

That stance has complicated negotiations. Milan are reluctant to let a key asset leave on temporary terms, particularly with the Serie A side seeking to reshape their squad and generate funds.

Marseille’s preference for a short-term arrangement has left Bennacer’s situation unresolved just days before the transfer window closes.

In contrast, talks over Ceballos appear to be progressing more smoothly.

Both the Spanish midfielder and Real Madrid are reportedly open to a season-long loan, aligning perfectly with Marseille’s strategy.

The 28-year-old, who came on as a late substitute in Madrid’s 3-0 win over Real Oviedo at the weekend, fuelled speculation about his departure by posting a photo on social media captioned The last dance, hinting that his cameo may have been his final appearance in a Madrid shirt this season.

Should Ceballos complete his move, Bennacer’s chances of joining OM would likely collapse.

Adding to the uncertainty, Marseille are also weighing the potential reinstatement of Adrien Rabiot, who has been linked with a departure following internal tensions at Juventus.

For Bennacer, the developments represent a significant setback.

Once considered a priority target for De Zerbi, his future now hangs in the balance as Marseille explore alternatives.

With less than a week remaining in the transfer window, the Algerian midfielder faces mounting pressure to secure a new club if the Marseille door closes.

The situation underscores the fine margins of the transfer market, where one deal can directly impact another.

For now, Bennacer’s hopes of a Marseille reunion depend heavily on whether Ceballos finalises his switch to the Stade Vélodrome.
