Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy named Al-Ahli captain for new season

Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy named Al-Ahly captain for new season

Edouard Mendy has been appointed captain of Al-Ahli as head coach Matthias Jaissle reshapes his leadership structure ahead of the new campaign.

The Senegalese international goalkeeper, who joined the Saudi Pro League side two years ago, has emerged as a central figure within the squad and will now lead the team on and off the pitch.

The decision comes after former captain Roberto Firmino departed to Al-Sadd in Qatar, creating an opening for a new leader in the Royal Club’s dressing room.

Mendy, 33, has impressed consistently since arriving in Saudi Arabia. His performances over the last two seasons played a decisive role in Al-Ahli’s domestic stability and their success on the continental stage.

Most notably, he was instrumental in the club’s run to the Asian Champions League triumph last season, underlining his reputation as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the region.

Coach Jaissle, who at 37 is among the youngest managers in the division, explained his choice as a reflection of Mendy’s influence and authority within the squad. While midfield powerhouse Franck Kessié and Algerian forward Riyad Mahrez had been considered likely successors to Firmino’s armband, Jaissle opted for the Senegalese goalkeeper, citing his leadership qualities and professionalism as decisive factors.

“It was important for me to appoint a captain who sets the standard every day,” Jaissle said. “Edouard leads not only by words but through his discipline, his consistency, and the way he demands the best of himself and others. This decision shows how much he means to the team.”

Mendy’s appointment represents a milestone in his career. After establishing himself in Europe with Rennes and later Chelsea—where he won the Champions League in 2021—the Dakar-born shot-stopper chose a new challenge in Saudi Arabia. His transition has been seamless, and his growing responsibility highlights the level of respect he commands both from teammates and the coaching staff.

For Al-Ahly, the move also signals a strategic choice. The club is preparing for a season of high expectations, balancing domestic ambitions with continental aspirations. Entrusting Mendy with the armband sends a clear message about the values Jaissle wants to instil in his squad: discipline, resilience, and unity.

The decision was not without surprise. Many had tipped Ivorian midfielder Kessié, who had already served as vice-captain, to inherit the role, particularly given his experience at the highest level with AC Milan and Barcelona.

Mahrez, with his wealth of Premier League and international pedigree, was also seen as a strong candidate. Yet, Jaissle’s preference for Mendy underscores his conviction that the goalkeeper’s presence provides the most stable leadership for the group.

For Mendy himself, the honour comes with added responsibility. Known for his calmness under pressure and his commanding presence in goal, he will now be expected to carry those same qualities into his captaincy.

His ability to unify the dressing room and motivate his teammates will be tested as Al-Ahli seek to defend their continental crown and challenge domestically.

Supporters have largely welcomed the decision, pointing to Mendy’s consistency and commitment since his arrival. With the Senegalese goalkeeper now wearing the armband, Al-Ahli will look to build on recent successes under his guidance.

As the new season begins, Mendy’s captaincy marks a new chapter for the Royal Club. His leadership will not only shape the team’s fortunes on the pitch but also set the tone for the culture Jaissle is building. For a player who has already achieved significant milestones in his career, this appointment stands as a recognition of both his footballing ability and his character.
