Middlesbrough are in advanced talks to sign Senegalese winger Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly from FC Metz, with a deal potentially finalised in the coming days.

The 26-year-old, who is under contract with the Ligue 1 club until June 2026, has attracted strong interest from the English Championship side.

According to Footmercato, negotiations between the two clubs have moved swiftly, and Sabaly is understood to be keen on the project outlined by the North Yorkshire outfit.

Sabaly’s departure would represent a significant setback for Metz, who earned promotion back to the French top flight last season.

A key figure in that success, he scored 15 goals and registered four assists in 34 Ligue 2 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign, finishing as the division’s fourth-highest scorer.

His pace, creativity, and clinical finishing proved decisive in helping Les Grenats secure their return to Ligue 1.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, see Sabaly as a player capable of making an immediate impact in their push for promotion to the Premier League.

His ability to operate both as a traditional winger and in more advanced attacking roles fits the club’s tactical approach under their current setup.

For Metz, the decision is complicated by the fact that they have already seen another attacking talent depart this summer.

Papa Amadou Diallo joined Norwich City earlier in the transfer window, leaving the club wary of weakening their offensive options further.

Losing Sabaly at this stage could force them into the market for a replacement, with the Ligue 1 season already underway.

The Senegal international’s consistency and experience have also made him a valued presence in the dressing room.

Since arriving at Metz, he has developed into one of their most reliable performers, combining individual flair with a strong work ethic.

His potential move to England would be seen as both a personal step forward and a considerable loss for the club that helped shape his rise.

Talks are ongoing, but all indications point towards a transfer being agreed soon, provided final terms are settled between the two clubs.

If confirmed, Sabaly would become one of Middlesbrough’s standout acquisitions of the summer, adding proven firepower to their squad ahead of what promises to be a fiercely competitive Championship season.
