In an exclusive interview with FilGoal.com, Guinea-Bissau’s head coach, Baciro Candé, shared his insights on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024, expressing his belief that Egypt, along with four other formidable teams, will be the contenders for the coveted title.
Candé identified the strong competitors, stating, “I expect Senegal, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Nigeria, and Morocco to vie for the title.
” Acknowledging the tough competition, he recognizes the capabilities of these nations and their potential impact on the tournament.
Discussing Guinea-Bissau’s participation in the competition, Candé expressed great satisfaction, emphasizing that their fourth consecutive appearance would provide the team with valuable experience.
He acknowledged that this experience would also bring added pressure to achieve better results than in the past.
“We will do everything to make our people proud.
We have a young and evolving team, adding to our determination to make a splendid appearance in the tournament,” stated Candé, highlighting the team’s commitment to delivering a commendable performance on the international stage.
Addressing the challenges within their group, Candé acknowledged the strength of the host nation and Ivory Coast, both considered strong contenders for the title.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s formidable squad, noting the significant number of exceptional players.
Guinea-Bissau faces these formidable opponents, along with Equatorial Guinea, in what Candé describes as an exceptionally captivating group.
Expressing gratitude for being honored with the highest national award, the Americal Cabral Medal, Candé pledged to work towards bringing joy to the nation through the team’s performance.
In their previous three appearances, Guinea-Bissau exited the tournament at the group stage.
They kick off their campaign on January 13 against Ivory Coast, followed by a match against Equatorial Guinea five days later.
The group stage concludes with a challenging encounter against Nigeria on January 22.
Baciro Candé has been at the helm of Guinea-Bissau’s coaching staff since 2016, serving a second term after his initial tenure from 2001 to 2010.
