Since his return to competition after a liver transplant, Eric Abidal has received admiration from the footballing world. Former Algerian international Ali Benarbia described the FC Barcelona defender as “extraterrestrial” on RMC. Benarbia emphasized the exceptional courage required for Abidal to return to normal life, let alone playing football at a high level, after undergoing two operations. He compared Abidal’s resilience to that of Lionel Messi, stating that Abidal is also an “alien” both physically and morally. Abidal was expected to start in the quarter-final first leg of the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich.
