Algerian goalkeeper Chloé N’gazi has emerged as one of the standout performers of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after keeping a clean sheet in all three group-stage matches and earning a place in CAF’s best XI of the first round.
At 29, N’gazi’s composure and commanding presence between the posts have been central to Algeria’s strong start to the tournament.
Her performances, particularly against Nigeria, where she delivered a series of crucial saves to help her side hold the reigning champions to a goalless draw, have marked her as a revelation of the competition.
“I worked hard. I had a difficult season without playing for six months. Today, I am happy with this recognition,” N’gazi told CAF Online, reflecting on the journey that has led to her current form.
N’gazi sees the draw against Nigeria as her defining moment so far, especially as it saw her go toe-to-toe with Chiamaka Nnadozie—Africa’s top-ranked goalkeeper from 2023.
The Olympique de Marseille shot-stopper doesn’t shy away from the comparison and is clear about her own goals.
“I know she was voted best goalkeeper last year. She deserved it. But I also want to become the best in Africa. I’m 29 years old and I feel like I’m reaching my best level. My ambition is to be named best goalkeeper in Africa. And it’s in competitions like this that it’s decided.”
Renowned for her footwork and ability to play out from the back, N’gazi draws inspiration from a modern icon of the position—Germany’s Manuel Neuer.
He’s my role model, she says. “He revolutionized the position. We’re not just goalkeepers anymore, we’re also outfield players. That’s what I’m aiming for.
Despite her personal accolades, N’gazi remains firmly grounded in the collective mission.
Algeria, who face Ghana on Saturday, July 19 at 16:00 GMT, are dreaming big, and the experienced goalkeeper is determined to help her team go all the way.
“We want to go as far as possible. It’s no longer a dream,” she said. “We work together. What we’re experiencing is collective.”
With her form peaking at the right time, N’gazi’s leadership at the back could be crucial as Algeria continues its journey through the knockout stages.
Her ambition to become Africa’s best is no longer a quiet wish—it’s a statement backed by performances on the pitch.
