Rachid Ghaflaoui Poised to Lead Niger’s Mena Toward AFCON 2017 Qualification
With the clock ticking ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Niger’s football authorities are in urgent search of a coach who combines charisma, local knowledge, and tactical acumen. One name has risen to the forefront: Rachid Ghaflaoui.
The Moroccan tactician, currently making waves with Sporting Club du Sahel, has expressed a strong interest in taking over the Mena. His success in Niger’s domestic scene and deep understanding of the local football ecosystem have made him a serious contender.
Ghaflaoui’s Vision
“My first goal is to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of Nations and also for the African Nations Championship,” Ghaflaoui told reporters. “I will try to convince all the star players to work towards this goal.”
The coach emphasized the need for a structured work plan, underpinned by open communication with the team’s core players. He also stressed the urgency of defining a clear roadmap backed by adequate resources.
On Moussa Maazou and Player Relations
Ghaflaoui, who is well-acquainted with the Nigerien player pool, addressed the ongoing tension surrounding Moussa Maazou, the country’s star striker.
“With communication, I will manage to convince him to collaborate. I will explain my project for the selection. He is a professional and will respond positively.”
Committed to the Cause
When asked about long-term commitment, Ghaflaoui made his intentions clear:
“Of course I plan to stay. What encourages me the most is the support of my president, Mr. Danssoussou, who completely agrees and sees Niger’s interest in me.”
As Niger eyes a third-ever AFCON qualification, appointing a coach with both tactical sense and strong ties to the local football culture could prove decisive. Ghaflaoui seems ready to take that challenge head-on.
