Rinsola Babajide eyes maiden title with Nigeria at 2024 Women’s AFCON

Rinsola Babajide is determined to help Nigeria’s Super Falcons clinch their tenth continental crown as the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco.

The 27-year-old winger heads into her first Women’s AFCON with high ambitions, eager to play a pivotal role for the Nigerian side and capture her first major title with the national team.

After featuring in a limited role during the 2024 Paris Olympics, the former Brighton & Hove Albion player is now focused on becoming an integral part of Nigeria’s quest for glory.

“It’s a very honourable feeling. I’m so privileged to be here,” Babajide expressed in a video shared on the Super Falcons’ official X account.

“Every time I get to put on my badge, I feel a deep honour and pride, so I can’t wait to get started.”

Drawn into Group B, Nigeria will open their campaign on July 6 against Tunisia in Casablanca.

The Super Falcons will then face Botswana on July 10 before concluding the group stage with a clash against Algeria on July 13 — all scheduled at the same venue.

For Babajide, the objectives are clear: to make her tournament debut, contribute significantly on the pitch, and lift her first senior international trophy.

“My personal goal is to make my debut, and I want to contribute as much as possible to the team’s wins—whether that’s through goals, assists, or my overall performance. I really want to win my first senior trophy,” she stated.

Under head coach Justine Madugu, the Super Falcons are aiming to reclaim their status as the undisputed queens of African women’s football.

Nigeria has historically dominated the Women’s AFCON, winning nine of the previous editions, but recent years have seen rising competition from other African nations.

Babajide’s journey to this moment has been one of resilience and determination. Born in England, the dynamic winger switched her international allegiance to Nigeria and has steadily worked her way into the squad.

Her pace, flair, and attacking instinct make her a valuable asset, and this tournament presents an opportunity for her to cement her place in the team.

The Super Falcons, driven by their rich legacy and hunger for success, are entering the tournament with a blend of experienced veterans and emerging talents. Babajide embodies this mix, representing both the future and the present of the team.

Beyond her personal ambitions, the winger is fully aligned with the team’s collective mission — to bring the trophy back to Nigeria.

The Super Falcons are not only seeking continental success but also aiming to make a statement about the continued growth and strength of African women’s football.

As the countdown to the tournament opener continues, Babajide remains focused on the task ahead.

Her determination reflects the mindset of a team ready to fight for every point, every goal, and ultimately, the title.

For the 27-year-old, Morocco 2024 could mark the beginning of a defining chapter in her international career — one written in gold with the Super Falcons.
