Equatorial Guinea President Honored with 2014 Issa Hayatou Peace Trophy
Equatorial Guinea’s President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has been awarded the 2014 Issa Hayatou Peace Trophy, a recognition bestowed by the Issa Hayatou International Foundation to individuals who significantly contribute to peace and health on the African continent.
The foundation’s president, Anoï Niniba, highlighted the president’s bold and impactful decision to host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on short notice after Morocco withdrew from organizing the tournament due to Ebola-related concerns. This pivotal move, just two months before kickoff, ensured the continuation of Africa’s most prestigious football event.
“The strongest and most touching act remains his decision to host the 30th edition of the CAN,” Niniba told the press, praising Obiang’s leadership and resolve.
Beyond football, the trophy also recognizes Obiang’s discreet but notable diplomatic interventions in various African conflicts, including Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, and the Central African Republic, citing his dedication to peacebuilding across the continent.
Obiang succeeds Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé, the 2013 recipient of the same honor.
