Souleymane Diawara Stays Classy After Victory Over Former Club OM
Just a week after playing a role in Nice’s 2-1 win over Bordeaux, Souleymane Diawara once again came off the bench to help secure another 2-1 victory, this time against Olympique de Marseille, a club close to his heart.
Having spent several seasons with OM and even seen his jersey number retired by club president Vincent Labrune, Diawara could have taken the opportunity to rub salt in the wound following Marseille’s recent poor run of form. Instead, the veteran defender chose respect over rivalry.
“OM remains a very good team. They had two or three chances that they could have put away. Every club goes through a down period at some point in the season. That’s the case with Marseille right now. I hope they’ll get through it quickly,” said Diawara.
Despite OM’s sluggish start to 2015, Diawara’s words may offer some comfort to fans. With his intimate knowledge of the club and experience on the pitch, his calm perspective suggests that this is just a rough patch for a team still capable of challenging at the top.
