Morocco joins race to host 2029 Club World Cup

Morocco has officially submitted its bid to host the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, joining a growing list of contenders vying for the right to stage one of world football’s most prestigious tournaments.

The North African nation’s candidacy was revealed by journalist Ben Jacobs, amid the ongoing 2025 edition of the tournament currently being held in the United States.

Morocco’s proposal comes as the Club World Cup undergoes a dramatic transformation, expanding from its traditional seven-team format to an eventual 48-team structure in 2029.

This move is widely seen as a strategic effort by the Moroccan government to further establish itself as a global football destination, while also preparing for its shared hosting responsibilities alongside Spain and Portugal for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco’s bid is expected to offer FIFA a strong case, having already successfully hosted the tournament three times—in 2013, 2014, and again in 2022.

The country is also gearing up to welcome the continent’s best national teams during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to run from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.

However, the competition to host the 2029 edition is intensifying.

Spain has also submitted a bid, further fuelling the friendly sporting rivalry between the two Mediterranean neighbours.

The two countries are already in discussions over the location of the 2030 World Cup final, with Spain proposing Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, while Morocco is lobbying for the Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane.

The United States, which is currently staging the Club World Cup for the first time, is also keen on returning as host in 2029.

Brazil, a footballing powerhouse that has never held the competition, rounds out the quartet of potential hosts.

No official decision has yet been made by FIFA, and the governing body is expected to assess infrastructure readiness, fan accessibility, and commercial viability before announcing its choice.

Should Morocco secure the bid, it would underscore the nation’s ambition to serve as a cornerstone of international football, particularly across the African continent.

As anticipation builds, the outcome of this bidding process could shape the future of the Club World Cup and set the tone for the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.
