Liverpool Close to Signing Ron Vlaar, Raising Questions Over Mamadou Sakho’s Future
Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of securing a deal for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar, a move that could complicate things for Mamadou Sakho’s quest for regular first-team football.
The Franco-Senegalese centre-back has returned from a three-month injury layoff, making two starts for the Reds and capitalising on Dejan Lovren’s inconsistent form. However, the potential arrival of the experienced Dutch defender could see Sakho pushed further down the pecking order.
According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are prepared to offer around €20 million for both Ron Vlaar and midfielder Fabian Delph from Aston Villa. The acquisitions are seen as part of the club’s efforts to strengthen their defensive options midway through the season.
Sakho, who moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Liverpool seeking more playing time, now faces increased competition, which may limit his opportunities further.
Complicating matters, Vlaar has also been linked with a move to Manchester United, where former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is currently in charge. For Sakho, a transfer to the Red Devils could provide some respite, though much depends on how the transfer saga unfolds in the coming weeks.
