AFCON 2015: No Algerian Fans in Equatorial Guinea Due to Accommodation Issues
Algerian supporters will be notably absent from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea. The announcement was made by Algeria’s Minister of Sports, who cited severe accommodation shortages in the host country as the primary reason.
“Accommodation opportunities are almost non-existent,” the Minister said, explaining that logistical constraints have made it impossible to organize fan travel for the group stage.
However, he did leave a door open for limited fan presence—if Algeria reaches the final, a small contingent of supporters may be allowed to travel.
This development could impact team morale, especially as Algeria faces a daunting Group C featuring Ghana, Senegal, and South Africa—arguably the “group of death” in this edition.
Despite the absence of fans, the Fennecs remain among the favorites after their impressive showing at the 2014 World Cup and a talented squad under new coach Christian Gourcuff.
Whether they can overcome both the sporting challenge and the emotional void in the stands remains to be seen.
