CAF Confederation Cup Final: Séwé Sports Defeat Al Ahly 2-1 in First Leg
Séwé Sports of San Pedro secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Egyptian giants Al Ahly on Saturday in Abidjan, in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final. The Ivorians now hold a slender advantage heading into the decisive second leg in Cairo.
The match began brightly for the home side, who opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through Christian Kouame, converting a penalty to give Séwé a deserved lead going into halftime.
Al Ahly responded strongly after the break, with Mahmoud Trezeguet netting the equalizer in the 59th minute. However, the Ivorians struck back late in the game, with Gbosze Honnadji scoring the winner in the 83rd minute, restoring their lead and energizing home supporters.
Despite conceding a potentially crucial away goal, Séwé’s coach Rigo Gervais remains confident:
“We have our cards in hand and we’re going to play the return match to the fullest. We’re not going to be shy. Let’s not forget that we beat Étoile du Sahel at home.”
“The score (2-1) isn’t bad. The dream can come true. After what my players showed against Al Ahly, one of the best teams on the continent, I believe in it.”
With the second leg scheduled for December 6 in Cairo, Séwé Sports will look to make history by claiming their first-ever continental trophy, while Al Ahly aim to complete their collection by winning the Confederation Cup—the only African title missing from their honors.
