Nabil Fekir: “I Always Wanted to Play in Lyon”
At just 21 years old, Nabil Fekir has quickly become a central figure at Olympique Lyonnais this season. With six goals and one assist to his name, the young Franco-Algerian has emerged as one of Ligue 1’s brightest revelations.
In an interview with Le Progrès, Fekir admitted his surprise at his swift rise:
“If someone had told me in November that I’d have scored six goals in Ligue 1, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
Fekir’s journey to the top was far from smooth. After spending two years in Lyon’s U13 squad, he was not retained by the club. But he never gave up on his dream.
“I wanted to show OL that I was capable of playing here. Today, it’s done.”
As Lyon prepares to face Saint-Étienne in a highly anticipated derby this weekend, Fekir remains focused on proving himself — especially in the city where he was born and raised.
“I had a better offer from ASSE, but I always wanted to play for Lyon. It’s a dream to play in front of my family and friends.”
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Fekir remains ambitious yet grounded:
“I want to win a cup. The league will be harder, but you never know. I also want to score goals and make assists. I want to be as influential as possible for the team — bringing speed and impact — but I know one player alone doesn’t make a team.”
With his humility and determination, Nabil Fekir is not only winning over fans — he’s becoming one of the cornerstones of Lyon’s future.
