AFCON 2015 Qualifiers: Mali Seek Redemption in Crucial Clash Against Algeria

Bamako, Mali – 19 November 2014

Mali face a crucial test on Wednesday as they host Algeria in the final round of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. With a place in the tournament at stake, the Eagles must overcome the formidable Algerians in front of a passionate home crowd.

This Group B showdown carries high stakes for both teams, but particularly for Mali. Anything less than victory would be considered a failure for coach Henry Kasperczak’s side, who are determined to restore their pride following a string of disappointing results.

Mali were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Algeria in the reverse fixture in Blida earlier in the campaign. Now, with home advantage and the weight of expectation, they aim to settle the score. The match is not just about qualification—it is a matter of national pride.

“This is more than just a game,” said a spokesperson from the Malian Football Federation. “It’s a chance to write a new chapter in our footballing history.”

The Eagles’ recent performances have fallen short of expectations, with defeats to Ethiopia and Malawi casting doubt over their campaign. A win over Algeria would not only avenge their earlier loss but could also seal a spot in the final tournament, depending on results elsewhere.

Kasperczak’s selection for the match reflects both experience and attacking intent. Soumaila Diakité will start in goal, with Salif Coulibaly, Idrissa Coulibaly, Adama Tamboura and Ousmane Coulibaly forming the defensive line.

In midfield, Mamoutou N’Diaye will anchor the play alongside Yacouba Sylla and Sigamari Diarra, while Sambou Yatabaré and Mustapha Yatabaré will provide creativity and width. Leading the line is Abdoulaye Diaby, whose goals could prove decisive in this do-or-die encounter.

Algeria, already qualified for the final tournament, come into the match with confidence, having topped the group with a perfect record so far. However, coach Christian Gourcuff is expected to field a competitive side, keen to maintain their unbeaten run.

Despite the challenge, Mali remain optimistic. “Algeria are a strong side, but we are ready,” said Kasperczak. “This is our last home game of the campaign, and we owe our fans a performance they can be proud of.”

Kick-off is scheduled for Wednesday evening at the Stade du 26 Mars in Bamako. The atmosphere is expected to be electric as Malian supporters rally behind their team in what could be one of the most significant matches in recent national football history.
