Benni McCarthy’s future as head coach of Kenya’s national team is in doubt, with Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed confirming that an exit plan is already built into the South African’s contract.
Speculation around McCarthy’s next move has intensified following his reported links with Orlando Pirates, where he remains a popular figure.
The coaching vacancy at the South African club emerged after the departure of Jose Riveiro in April, raising questions over McCarthy’s long-term commitment to his current role with the Harambee Stars.
Appointed in March, McCarthy has been leading Kenya’s preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), but the rumblings around his potential departure have overshadowed recent efforts on the pitch.
Speaking to Citizen TV, FKF president Hussein Mohammed addressed the growing uncertainty, confirming that both the federation and McCarthy had established clear terms in the event of an early exit.
“We agreed in the contract that we had to notify each other if we wanted him to leave. If he also wanted to, the conditions are very clear: we have to set a deadline. It will be short, maybe two to three months, and we will simply say that we want to separate and that we have a very clear exit plan,” Mohammed explained.
The openness of the arrangement suggests that both sides were aware of potential challenges from the outset.
While McCarthy’s arrival brought renewed optimism to the Kenyan setup, his connection to the Orlando Pirates — a club where he enjoyed success both as a player and manager — has remained strong.
Despite the speculation, McCarthy has continued to focus on his responsibilities with the Harambee Stars, guiding the team through CHAN qualifiers and attempting to build a competitive squad for the future.
Whether his tenure extends beyond the current tournament remains to be seen, but the FKF’s remarks indicate a pragmatic approach to the situation, with both parties seemingly prepared for a smooth separation if required.
As Kenya continues its preparations for CHAN 2024, the question of McCarthy’s commitment could cast a shadow over the squad’s momentum.
