There are ongoing negotiations between the Cameroonian football authorities and head coach Jean Paul Akono regarding the terms of his contract. The victory against Togo (2-1) in March during the World Cup qualifiers for Brazil 2014 has brought attention to the issue. While the signing of the contract seems imminent, a major stumbling block has emerged over the matter of salary.
Jean Paul Akono has reportedly requested a monthly salary of 15 million CFA francs, but the Cameroonian Ministry of Sports considers this amount “too high.” The ministry, led by Adoum Garoua, and his team are offering a salary of 7 million CFA francs.
According to Camfoot, Akono’s deputy requested eight million, which is double the amount he earned when serving as Denis Lavagne’s deputy. Despite the salary negotiations, the signing of the contract is expected to proceed smoothly, especially since the Head of State had specifically requested the formation of the coaching staff to support the national team.
A meeting has already taken place between Akono, his deputy, and the director of high-level sports to discuss possible salary terms. An initial offer of 42 million CFA francs, covering seven months of salary for the period from September 2012 to March 2013, was reportedly rejected by Akono, who disputed the existence of any contract during that time.
