Ghana Goalkeeper Fatau Dauda Returns to Ashanti Gold
1 October 2014
Ghanaian international goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has returned to his homeland, signing with Ashanti Gold—his former club and hometown side—on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper rejoins the Obuasi-based club after terminating his contract with South African outfit Chippa United, which he joined just two months ago. His departure comes after a brief and unsettled spell in South Africa, where he struggled to establish himself.
Dauda’s return to Ashanti Gold marks a homecoming for the experienced goalkeeper, who previously played for the club between 2006 and 2013. It was during this initial stint that he rose to prominence, earning recognition both domestically and internationally, which eventually led to moves abroad.
His time in South Africa began with a transfer to Orlando Pirates, one of the country’s most storied clubs. However, his spell there was marred by limited playing time, as he found himself relegated to the bench for much of the season. Seeking more opportunities, he made the switch to Chippa United in a bid to revive his club career—but the move failed to deliver the fresh start he had hoped for.
Now back with Ashanti Gold, Dauda will be looking to reset his career in familiar surroundings. His return is expected to provide a significant boost to the club, both in terms of experience and leadership. Dauda remains one of Ghana’s most recognised goalkeepers, having featured for the national team at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Ashanti Gold, who have long regarded Dauda as a key figure in their past successes, welcomed the veteran’s return as they prepare for the upcoming Ghana Premier League campaign.
Dauda’s comeback is not only a personal reset but also a potential catalyst for Ashanti Gold’s ambitions, as the club seeks to reassert itself among Ghana’s top teams. For the goalkeeper, the move offers a chance to rebuild form, regain confidence, and potentially reclaim his place in the national team setup.
With the move now official, all eyes will be on Dauda to see if he can rediscover the form that once made him Ghana’s number one.
