Johnny McKinstry dismissed as Sierra Leone coach after poor AFCON qualifying start

Johnny McKinstry’s tenure as Sierra Leone’s national team coach came to an abrupt end on Wednesday, when the local Minister of Sports terminated his contract following disappointing results in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Irish coach confirmed the news on his website, stating he was informed by email of his dismissal after Sierra Leone lost their first two qualifying matches—2-1 against Ivory Coast and 2-0 against DR Congo. These results have severely dented the team’s chances of reaching the tournament.

Despite the setback, McKinstry pointed out that he had met key objectives during his tenure, including guiding Sierra Leone to a top-50 FIFA ranking—the highest in the country’s history—and maintaining a competitive position in a tough qualifying group featuring Ivory Coast and Cameroon.

“I am proud of what we achieved under difficult conditions,” McKinstry said, lamenting the circumstances of his departure. At just 27 years old when appointed in 2013, he was one of the youngest national team coaches worldwide.

Following the recent FIFA rankings release, Sierra Leone has dropped 23 places to 17th in Africa and 75th globally. The decision to part ways with McKinstry has shocked players and fans alike, including striker Kei Kamara.

Supporters expressed gratitude for McKinstry’s dedication: “Sad to see him go but thank you for your loyalty and hard work. You surely made a difference, Coach Johnny McKinstry.”
