Egyptian club Pyramids FC beat Mamelodi Sundowns to lift first-ever CAF Champions League title

Egyptian giants Pyramids FC have been crowned Champions of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League season.

The club lifted the enviable trophy on Sunday, June 1, after a hard-fought 2-1 win over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of the final.

The victory secured Pyramids FC a 3-2 triumph on aggregate to merit the CAF Champions League title.

In the second leg played at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, both teams set up strong in a bid to win the trophy after playing a 1-1 draw at the end of the first leg.

Pyramids FC opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Fiston Mayele capitalised on a rebound at the edge of the box and fired a low shot past Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give the hosts an early lead.

The Cairo-based club doubled their advantage in the 56th minute. Mohamed Chibi delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, finding Ahmed Samy unmarked.

Samy’s powerful header flew into the net, but celebrations were briefly put on hold as referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan consulted VAR to check for a possible offside in the build-up. After the review, the goal stood, much to the delight of the home fans.

Mamelodi Sundowns pulled one back in the 76th minute when Iqraam Rayners pounced on a loose ball inside the box and smashed it into the bottom left corner.

The goal went to VAR but was cleared as legitimate. While Pyramids FC would push for a crucial second goal, the team did not succeed and suffered a heartbreak at the end of the contest.

Pyramids FC held firm to secure a historic 2-1 win on the night and a 3-2 aggregate triumph.

After the CAF Champions League win, the Egyptian side has made a bold statement as one of the top clubs on the continent.
