Léopold Sendar Senghor Stadium Set to Reopen Ahead of Key Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier
After being suspended in the wake of violent incidents during the Senegal vs. Ivory Coast match in October 2012, the Léopold Sendar Senghor stadium is scheduled to reopen on 15 August. The venue will once again host Senegal’s national team, the Lions of Teranga, for their crucial 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Egypt on 5 September.
In preparation for this important fixture, extensive renovation work has been undertaken at the stadium. Senegalese sports authorities conducted an on-site inspection last Thursday to monitor the progress of the refurbishments.
“The commitments made must be honoured. There will be no question of playing elsewhere,” stated Matar Bâ, the newly appointed head of Senegalese sport. “The stadium will be ready by 15 August, and we expect everyone to respect that date. Senegal is determined to host its matches at home.”
During the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Senegal was forced to play its home fixtures in Guinea and Morocco due to the suspension of their stadium. The return to the Léopold Sendar Senghor stadium marks a significant step in restoring home advantage for the team.
Senegal, which missed the 2013 AFCON tournament in South Africa, faces a challenging qualifying group alongside Egypt, Tunisia, and either Botswana or Guinea-Bissau.
