‘Premier League is a different world’ – Amorim plays down Obi Martin hype after Hong Kong brace

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim struck a measured tone following his side’s 3-1 comeback win against Hong Kong, singling out teenage forward Chido Obi Martin for praise—but also caution.

The Danish-Nigerian striker lit up the match with a second-half brace, prompting questions about whether he is ready for a first-team breakthrough.

Amorim, while pleased with the youngster’s contribution, tempered the excitement by warning that Premier League football represents a far more demanding challenge.

Born to Nigerian parents, Chido Obi Martin has been a rising star in Manchester United’s youth ranks and has already drawn considerable attention for his scoring exploits at U18 level.

His performance in Hong Kong only added to his growing reputation. Introduced after the interval with United trailing 1-0, Martin turned the game in United’s favour with two expertly executed goals.

His first, a sharp turn and finish into the corner, displayed composure beyond his years, while his second—a well-placed header from a Mason Mount cross—confirmed his striker’s instinct.

Amad and Mount also impressed during the second-half rally, with Ayden Heaven capping off the victory late on. But it was Martin who stole the spotlight, offering a glimpse of the attacking threat he could one day bring to the senior squad.

Still, Amorim urged perspective when asked about the 16-year-old’s readiness for top-flight action.

“I think he proved already in U18s he can score goals. Premier League is a completely different world. It’s a good start, he is working really well. I was really pleased with all the kids tonight,” Amorim told reporters post-match.
