Algeria Pushes Germany to the Limit in Thrilling World Cup Round of 16 Clash
Sofiane Feghouli and a determined Algerian squad delivered a stunning performance against Germany in the 2014 World Cup Round of 16, pushing the reigning champions to the brink before succumbing in extra time.
The match, held in Porto Alegre on Tuesday, saw Algeria, known as the Fennecs, defy expectations with a spirited and attractive style of play. Goalkeeper Raïs M’Bolhi was outstanding, keeping Germany at bay for much of the contest. However, Germany’s André Schürrle broke the deadlock with a dramatic goal in the 92nd minute, just after the start of extra time.
The intensity continued to build as Mesut Özil doubled Germany’s lead in the 120th minute. Yet Algeria refused to give up, with Abdelmoumene Djabou scoring in the 121st minute, setting up a frantic finish. Despite the late surge, the Fennecs’ gallant effort fell short as Germany advanced.
Reflecting on the match, Feghouli expressed both pride and disappointment. “It’s always cruel to lose when you see the performance you put in,” he told L’Equipe. “That’s football; the best go through in the end. We knew we were facing the toughest opponent in the World Cup, a very experienced team, which often reaches the semi-finals.”
Feghouli praised his team’s approach, emphasizing the quality of their football. “We played very good football, tried to give people pleasure, without ever cheating. But it all came down to details. Unfortunately, we didn’t go through. Congratulations to the Germans.”
For the Algerian midfielder, the tournament was a major success for the nation. “Before starting the competition, we wanted to demonstrate that Algeria was a great footballing nation in the making. We achieved that during this tournament and by holding our own against this German team.”
Algeria’s courageous display earned them admiration worldwide and confirmed their rise as a competitive force on football’s biggest stage. Though their World Cup run ended in heartbreak, the Fennecs have left a lasting impression.
