José Anigo Confirms Departure from Marseille, Backs Bielsa as Future Coach
After overseeing a thrilling 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, José Anigo confirmed the widespread rumors that he will be stepping down from his role as coach of Olympique Marseille at the end of the season.
In an interview with Canal+, Anigo revealed that his time at the helm of the club was coming to an end, stating, “I’ll probably be far from Marseille next year. There comes a time when you have to know when to step aside.” He continued, “Working for OM? Possible, but far from Marseille. I want to first enjoy tonight’s victory with my staff and players. On Thursday, we’ll have a discussion with President Vincent Labrune, and we’ll explain everything to you. We’ll tell you what decision we made together a few months ago.”
The future of the club is already set, as the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as the new head coach has been confirmed. Anigo expressed his belief that Bielsa is the right man to guide Marseille into a new era, saying, “There is a project underway, and there is a great coach coming. The best is yet to come for OM. Bielsa? That’s where we will see people’s intelligence. This man is a builder; he has the potential to lead OM into an interesting future. We must let him work, work, and have his own conception of the game.”
As Anigo prepares to exit, attention now turns to the arrival of Bielsa, who is expected to bring his unique managerial style to Marseille and help restore the club’s fortunes.
