Egypt gears up to tame the Black Stars: a historical perspective

The forthcoming African Cup of Nations, set to unfold in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, will showcase the prowess of 24 national teams.

Among them, Egypt stands ready to navigate the group stage in Group B alongside Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

Guided by Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria, the Egyptian national team shoulders the expectations of fans eager to reclaim the continental title.

Egypt’s path to African glory has been obscured since their last triumph in 2010 in Angola.

As the historical narrative unfolds, Egypt has clashed with Ghana in 22 matches, emerging victorious in 10 encounters, conceding 6 defeats, and settling for a draw in 6 instances.

Despite the historical edge held by the Pharaohs, a resounding defeat remains etched in history as the most significant outcome in their encounters with Ghana.

The Ghanaian national team secured a staggering 6-1 victory over Egypt during the qualifying rounds for the 2014 World Cup.

Conversely, Egypt’s most substantial win against Ghana transpired in 1997, a friendly match ending 3-2 in favor of the Pharaohs.

Their paths have crossed four times in the African Cup of Nations. The initial encounter took place in 1970, concluding with a 1-1 draw.

The second clash occurred in 1992, concluding with Ghana’s victory by a solitary goal.

The third, a pivotal moment, unfolded in the final of the 2010 AFCON edition, where Egypt emerged victorious with a goal from Mohamed Nagy Gedo.

The trend continued in 2017 in Gabon, with Egypt securing a 1-0 win to conclude the group stage.

As Egypt prepares to embark on this historic encounter with Ghana in the upcoming African Cup of Nations, the backdrop of their past clashes adds an extra layer of anticipation and significance to the unfolding drama in Ivory Coast.
