Barcelona Crowned UEFA Youth League Champions as El Haddadi Shines
Barcelona’s next generation of stars has made its mark on the European stage, clinching the inaugural UEFA Youth League title with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benfica in Monday’s final in Nyon, Switzerland.
The standout performer was 18-year-old Moroccan-Spanish forward Munir El Haddadi, who scored twice—one of which was an audacious strike from behind the halfway line that left spectators and scouts alike in awe.
The young left-footer, who stands at 1.72 metres, proved pivotal in the Catalans’ win. He was involved in the build-up to the opening goal before showcasing his flair and technical ability with a brace that underlined his reputation as one of La Masia’s brightest talents. His second goal—a lob from inside his own half—quickly drew comparisons to some of the most memorable strikes in youth competition history.
El Haddadi joined Barcelona in 2011 from Rayo Majadahonda, then a fourth-division Spanish side. Since then, he has progressed rapidly through the ranks at La Masia, the club’s renowned youth academy, which has produced the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andrés Iniesta.
Despite attracting interest from top European clubs and speculation over a potential transfer earlier in the season, El Haddadi recently committed his future to Barcelona by signing a new contract until 2017. The deal includes a €12 million release clause—set to rise to €35 million if he features for the first team.
His performance in the Youth League final has only intensified the spotlight on his international future. Born in Spain to Moroccan parents, El Haddadi is eligible to represent either country at senior level. Both federations are reportedly eager to secure his allegiance.
Barcelona’s Youth League success reaffirms the club’s status as a powerhouse in youth development. Their dominant display in the final, capped by El Haddadi’s brilliance, suggests that the future remains bright at the Camp Nou.
