Ivorian striker Didier Ya Konan marked his return to form with a decisive goal on Saturday, guiding Hannover 96 to a vital 2-1 victory over relegation rivals Hamburg SV in the Bundesliga.
Back from a lengthy injury layoff, Ya Konan’s late strike secured all three points for the home side, just two months before the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup — a timely boost for the forward and the Ivory Coast national team.

The goal was Ya Konan’s second since returning from injury, and it couldn’t have come at a more crucial time for Hannover, who now sit 13th in the Bundesliga table. The win gives them a four-point cushion above the relegation playoff spot.
Hamburg, meanwhile, remain in 16th place — just one point above the automatic relegation zone — and face increasing pressure as the season nears its conclusion.
Speaking after the match, Hannover manager Tayfun Korkut praised Ya Konan’s impact. “He’s worked hard to come back, and today he showed how important he can be for us. It was a striker’s goal, and it won us the match.”
