Didier Ya Konan Fires Hannover to Crucial Win in Bundesliga Survival Clash
Ivorian striker Didier Ya Konan marked his return to form with a decisive goal on Saturday, guiding Hannover 96 to a vital 2-1 victory over relegation rivals Hamburg SV in the Bundesliga.
Back from a lengthy injury layoff, Ya Konan’s late strike secured all three points for the home side, just two months before the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup — a timely boost for the forward and the Ivory Coast national team.
In a match featuring two sides battling to avoid the drop, it was Hannover who struck first. Midfielder Lars Stindl gave the hosts an early lead in the 9th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to beat Hamburg goalkeeper René Adler.
Despite the early setback, Hamburg responded with renewed intent in the second half. They found their equaliser in the 48th minute through Hakan Calhanoglu, whose curling free-kick left the Hannover defence helpless.
With the game seemingly drifting toward a draw, it was Ya Konan who proved the difference. In the 82nd minute, Hamburg’s Johan Djourou failed to properly clear a loose ball in the box, allowing Ya Konan to pounce and slot home the winner — a composed finish that underlined his poacher’s instincts.
The goal was Ya Konan’s second since returning from injury, and it couldn’t have come at a more crucial time for Hannover, who now sit 13th in the Bundesliga table. The win gives them a four-point cushion above the relegation playoff spot.
Hamburg, meanwhile, remain in 16th place — just one point above the automatic relegation zone — and face increasing pressure as the season nears its conclusion.
Speaking after the match, Hannover manager Tayfun Korkut praised Ya Konan’s impact. “He’s worked hard to come back, and today he showed how important he can be for us. It was a striker’s goal, and it won us the match.”
The result could also have implications for Ivory Coast coach Sabri Lamouchi, who is set to name his squad for the World Cup in Brazil. Ya Konan’s return to fitness and form will be welcome news, especially with key group matches against Japan, Colombia and Greece on the horizon.
With the Bundesliga season entering its final stretch, Hannover will look to build on this momentum and secure their top-flight status. For Ya Konan, the timing couldn’t be better as he aims to play his way back into international contention.
