French forward Antony Modeste led his team, Al Ahly, to clinch the Egyptian Super Cup in football after a 4-2 victory over Modern Future in the final held in the United Arab Emirates.
The two teams resorted to extra time after drawing 2-2 in regular time, with Al Ahly’s Mahmoud Abdel Moneim (Kahraba) scoring in the 12th minute and Hussein El Shahat in the 34th minute.
Future’s Omar El Said and Mohamed Mahmoud scored in the 76th and 81st minutes.
Modeste netted the third goal in the fourteenth minute of extra time and, two minutes later, provided an assist to his teammate Karim Fouad, who sealed his team’s 4-2 victory, securing Al Ahly’s 14th title in the history of the Super Cup.
VAR technology saved the French player after the assistant referee signaled an offside, but the video assistant referee settled the controversy, confirming the goal.
Modeste celebrated in a different manner, reflecting the pressure he had been under recently.
Former Borussia Dortmund player Modeste had faced criticism from Al Ahly fans and the media for his modest performances in the league, the CAF Champions League, and the recently concluded Club World Cup, where the African champions secured the third-place finish.
Before the Egyptian Super Cup, Al Ahly’s head coach Marcel Koller, in a press statement, mentioned Modeste’s run of bad luck, saying, “Antony Modeste has had bad luck with us.
After the time he needed to adapt, he suffered an injury, then was sent off in the Club World Cup, and his mental state worsened after that. I hope that changes for us in the upcoming matches.”
Modeste continued to make a positive impact for Al Ahly in the Super Cup, becoming the fifth professional to score for Al Ahly in the Egyptian Super Cup, securing their first championship with four participating teams.
The match also witnessed the struggle of Al Ahly’s player Imam Ashour, who requested a substitution in the 75th minute due to injury.
Shortly after, goalkeeper Mustafa Schubert, playing due to Mohamed El Shenawy’s injury, made a catastrophic error in the six-yard box, allowing Omar Said of Modern Future to score their first goal.
