Zamalek’s hopes of gaining ground in the Egyptian Premier League took a hit after midfielder Nasser Maher sustained an injury in training ahead of their crucial tie with Al-Masry on Thursday.
The club, currently sitting third in the standings with 38 points, had been eyeing a win to leapfrog second-placed Al Ahly, who are just two points ahead. However, the timing of Maher’s injury presents a challenge as they gear up for the third round of the league’s group stage.
A source close to the club confirmed to Kwoora.com: “Nasser Maher suffered an ankle injury, and the player will undergo medical tests, but it is likely that he will miss the Al-Masry match.”
The midfielder later shared a photo of his swollen foot on Instagram, drawing concern from fans ahead of the important clash.
Medical assessments are expected to determine the exact extent of the injury and how long Maher will be out.
Al-Masry, who are just four points behind Zamalek in fourth place, will be looking to capitalize on their rival’s misfortune.
