AS FAR have taken a significant step towards securing a return to the CAF Champions League after claiming a 2-0 victory over Chabab Soualem on Wednesday in the Moroccan Botola Pro.
With just three matches remaining in the season, the Rabat-based side now hold a six-point advantage over Wydad Casablanca in the battle for second place, a position that guarantees qualification for Africa’s premier club competition.
The win comes at a crucial time, capitalising on faltering form from their closest challengers.
Wydad Casablanca missed the chance to maintain pressure on AS FAR, surrendering a late lead to draw 1-1 with Olympique de Safi.
Despite taking control of the match early, Wydad failed to hold on, conceding a late equaliser that dented their Champions League hopes.
Elsewhere, FUS Rabat experienced a similarly frustrating evening.
Having raced into a 2-0 lead against Moghreb de Tétouan, FUS saw their advantage evaporate in the dying minutes, ultimately settling for a 2-2 draw.
The result further widens the gap between themselves and the top two.
Renaissance Zemamra also saw points slip through their fingers, drawing 1-1 with Maghreb Fez.
That result leaves them level on points with FUS Rabat in fourth place, each with 44 points.
Meanwhile, Wydad remain in third, one point ahead of both FUS and Zemamra, occupying the last available spot for qualification into the CAF Confederation Cup.
AS FAR, also known as the Royal Armed Forces Sports Association, are aiming for a third consecutive appearance in the CAF Champions League.
The team has shown steady progress on the continental stage.
After falling at the round of 32 to Étoile du Sahel last season, they improved this year by reaching the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Egyptian club Pyramids.
The recent win not only bolsters their league standing but also adds momentum to a campaign that has seen them evolve into one of Morocco’s most consistent outfits.
With just three matches remaining, AS FAR now have their Champions League destiny firmly in their own hands.
Their ability to hold composure as others around them falter could prove decisive in what remains of a tightly contested run-in.
A third straight continental campaign is now within touching distance.
