Dominic Solanke’s recent goal against Eintracht Frankfurt has not only earned Tottenham Hotspur a place in the Europa League semi-finals, but also drawn praise from manager Ange Postecoglou, who has lauded the striker’s all-round contribution to the team’s style of play.
The 27-year-old, who is of Nigerian heritage, scored from the penalty spot in the 1-0 victory in Frankfurt, ending a 12-game goal drought and reminding fans of his value to the North London side.
Solanke’s performance, particularly his tireless defensive effort, has been key to Spurs’ progress, with Postecoglou calling him “super important”.
“I know he’s a striker and when they don’t score people will focus on that but he’s such an important part of the way we play,” Postecoglou said.
“Dom and the two wingers had important jobs for us from a defensive point of view.”
The manager also explained the physical demands placed on Solanke, who remains influential even when not on the scoresheet.
“Dom usually receives the ball when he’s done four or five sprints closing people down… but we feel as a team that gives us a better chance of success.”
The goal was a timely boost for Solanke, who continues to battle for a consistent place in the starting lineup amidst strong competition.
Brazilian forward Richarlison is now fully fit after a calf injury and is expected to return to action soon, though Postecoglou reiterated Solanke’s significance.
“Richy is another one who is going to get some game time in the next couple of games because he’s looking really good in training. But Dom’s been super important,” he said.
