Algeria’s U15 boys’ team is set to compete in the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championship, which will take place from April 21 to 26 at the University of Ghana’s Legon Sports Stadium in Accra.
The tournament marks the first time the continental finals are being held in West Africa, following previous editions in South Africa and Tanzania.
In the group stage, Algeria has been drawn into a challenging Group A alongside host nation Ghana, South Africa, and Uganda.
These teams are recognized for their strong traditions in school football, presenting a formidable challenge for the Algerian side.
The tournament features eight teams in the boys’ category: Ghana, Algeria, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and DR Congo.
The competition format involves splitting the teams into two groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
Matches will consist of two 20-minute halves with a 10-minute halftime break.
In the event of a draw at the end of regulation time, the winner will be determined by a penalty shootout.
Substitutions are unlimited, allowing maximum participation among players.
The championship is supported by a $10 million donation from the Motsepe Foundation, with prize money allocated as follows: $300,000 for the winners, $200,000 for the runners-up, and $150,000 for the third-place team.
Beyond the competition, the event includes capacity-building programs for young participants, featuring workshops for referees, reporters, coaches, and medical officers.
These initiatives aim to foster education, skills, and opportunities for young players across Africa.
Algeria’s U15 team qualified for the tournament by winning the UNAF zonal qualifiers, securing a 1-0 victory against Tunisia and a 0-0 draw with Morocco.
As they prepare to face strong opponents in Group A, the team aims to advance beyond the group stage, a milestone they have yet to achieve in previous editions.
