Nkunku was dropped for Fulham game because of a technical decision – Enzo Maresca

Christopher Nkunku

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Christopher Nkunku was left out of the squad for the 2-1 win over Fulham due to a “technical decision” rather than injury.

The French forward, who has Congolese heritage, was absent from the matchday lineup at Craven Cottage despite playing the full 90 minutes in the midweek defeat to Legia Warsaw.

Nkunku’s omission came as a surprise, especially given the lack of impact from Chelsea’s regular attackers.

With Nicolas Jackson once again struggling to find form, many expected Nkunku to be in contention for a starting place or at least a role off the bench.

However, Maresca’s response — “It was just a technical decision” — offered little clarity, raising further questions about the player’s status within the squad.

The victory against Fulham saw Chelsea return to the Premier League’s top five.

Tyrique George and Pedro Neto scored late goals to overturn a deficit and secure the Blues’ first away win of 2025.

The attacking substitutions, including George and Jadon Sancho, proved crucial as Chelsea pushed for a Champions League spot.

Maresca’s tactical changes received praise, but Nkunku’s continued exclusion has become increasingly notable.

Despite showcasing promise when fit, the 27-year-old has struggled to cement a regular role in the Premier League side.

His continued absence, especially in light of underwhelming performances from other forwards, may indicate a lack of faith from the manager.

Nkunku’s future at Stamford Bridge is now under scrutiny. With limited opportunities and no public assurance from the coaching staff, speculation is growing that he may seek a move away in the summer.
