Jean-Philippe Mateta marked his return to competitive football for Crystal Palace on Saturday, featuring in the club’s 3-0 victory over Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
The French-Ivorian forward, who had been sidelined for over a month after suffering a gruesome ear injury, played 70 minutes while wearing protective headgear.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury during Palace’s 3-1 win over Millwall in the fifth round of the FA Cup, when he was accidentally struck by the studs of goalkeeper Liam Roberts.
The impact left Mateta with a deep cut that required 25 stitches, forcing him to miss his side’s March 8 clash against Ipswich Town in the Championship.
A Strong Return Despite Limited Impact
Taking to the field at Craven Cottage with a protective helmet to shield his injured ear, Mateta did not register a goal or assist but delivered a solid performance before being substituted in the 70th minute.
His replacement, Eddie Nketiah, made an immediate impact, scoring just five minutes later to help Palace secure a convincing win.
Mateta’s return was well-timed, as the international break provided him with an opportunity to recover without missing multiple fixtures.
His comeback strengthens Palace’s attacking options as they prepare for the final stages of the FA Cup.
Palace March On in FA Cup
With the victory over Fulham, Crystal Palace secured a spot in the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament.
They now await their next opponents, with Manchester City potentially joining them in the last four if they overcome Bournemouth in their quarter-final fixture on Sunday.
As Palace continues their impressive FA Cup campaign, Mateta’s return offers a boost to their ambitions.
With his recovery progressing well, he will be eager to regain full match sharpness and contribute to his club’s pursuit of silverware in the closing stages of the season.
